Small smith machines are available in many different forms. There is no such thing as a compact machine that can simply be tucked underneath the bed, however, many gyms need a little bit of extra space, so it helps to have a much more compact machine that leaves room for other machines in a gym. These machines are commonly in demand, but many other machines and free weight tools provide the same style of lifting, so it's understandable that many institutions may want to save space in this way.
The smaller machines are products that are only the smith rather than what is more commonly the case, a combination of machine, power rack and weight plate racks. These products take up a large amount of space and they are needed by a number of different users for different purposes. Theoretically, these are also a great way to save space as well, because they combine a smith with the other equipment so the machine itself may essentially take up no space at all. However, this can also lead to lines and waits for the machine as well, so many gyms decide to separate these devices.
The smith was invented in the 1950s by Jack La Lanne and it represents one of the safest ways to access difficult exercises like the squat without the aid of a spotter. These products allow athletes to safely push the envelope of their performance without the risk of sudden muscle failure. However, there are drawbacks as these products can train poor form.
