Weight lifting straps are an essential part of increasing the amount of weight an athlete can lift safely as they progress in their weight training program. Many people forget that muscles tend to increase in strength at different rates and the one point where this really occurs is when the arms, backs, and chest begin to outpace a person's ability to grip.
That's where straps come in. These products allow athletes the opportunity to lift much more than they normally could by provide extra grip and support. It isn't a huge amount, but it's enough to allow training for the rest of the body to continue at pace with having to wait for the arms and hands to catch up.
These products are typically made of either leather or cotton and they look like a 'p.' The hands insert through the loops while the strap is wrapped around a barbell. In this manner, the bar is gripped more tightly than normally. These tools are also helpful for safety. Even if a person could lift a heavy weight, these products will help ensure that random accidents involving grip are less likely to occur. For this reason, many athletes choose to use these products almost constantly when performing certain exercises.
Though many get excited to try these products out, always make sure that your body is ready to lift a certain weight. Straps can add extra confidence, but they cannot make muscles stronger, so it's a beginner's mistake to assume that these straps add safety to weight that cannot be lifted anyway.
