Whether you get bored easily or just want to know how to get the best workout possible, many people continuously ask what they should do in between workout sets. This is an important question to ask as some people do things in between sets that actually negate the previous set, such as doing some lighter weight reps which they believe will help keep their muscles warmed up for the next round. By doing that you run the risk of fatiguing your muscles and even causing muscle damage. Here are a few tips on what to do in between weight training sets.
For starters, you can never have too much water (well, technically you could drink too much, but that would take quite a bit of water). In fact, you sometimes lose sweat and don't even realize it. Sometimes perspiration simply evaporates off of your skin before you have time to notice its moisture or cooling effect. But chances are you definitely realize it during heavy workouts. This is your body trying to cool you down, so the harder you work, the hotter you'll get and the more sweat your body will produce to counter your rising temperature (one of the reasons it's quite wise to wear some type of hat if you're cross-training outdoors). Your sweat is comprised mostly of water, so as your body attempts to cool itself, it's actually dehydrating itself. Your body's not stupid, it's just that maintaining a proper body temperature is a much more vital responsibility for basic survival. It only takes a few minutes at a higher than normal body temperature to cause serious issues, whereas you can typically last three to five days without water. So make sure to drink plenty of water in between workout sets. And no matter how thirsty you are, make sure you drink it slowly to avoid cramping.
Supplementing can also be a good thing to do in between sets. When you lift weights and conduct strenuous workouts, you actually break your muscles. By consuming a protein supplement or taking some creatine, you can help your body better withstand the workout by providing it with the nutrients necessary to sustain and rebuild its muscles. At the very least, supplementation after your workout is crucial to nourishing your muscles and encouraging maximal growth.
Stretch those muscles! By stretching your muscles in between sets, you will help prevent against cramping or muscles knotting up. You can also try massaging and kneading your muscles. This mechanical action actually helps to physically break up any lactic acid forming in your muscles.
