Hex dumbbells are the most practical free weights available. They represent a great example of how a simple idea can make a huge impact on the safety and organization of any gym. Though most people consider free weights to be just dumbbells there is actually a great amount of difference between various models. However, any model that you are considering purchasing should be a hex model in order to take advantage of this feature.
Generally, a hex shape makes one large different - it prevents rolling. This can be a major problem at two points. The first is during storage. Naturally, most free weight sets include racks of some variety, however, these racks are far more stable with a hex shape instead of a round shape. The second point where rolling becomes a major problem is during lifting. If an accident was to occur and a free weight was dropped, the hex shape prevents it from rolling. If a weight did roll it could cause it to impact a person, roll into a rack, or cause further damage to the surrounding area. A hex shape prevents all of this.
However, there is one drawback. A hex shape does lead to corners on the edges of the free weight. If this does hit the ground, it can cause dents and other punctures to anything it strikes. While round weights would be just as heavy, their curve would reduce the severity of impact. Nonetheless, with a good solid and tough mat underneath all training areas, the floor can be easily and well protected from these hopefully unlikely events.
